Tasting Notes: Pear & Citrus
This is a very simple example of the Alsace grape variety, with a fragrant nose of pear and citrus. The palate is intense with sweet fruit flavours of melon and apricot, along with some honeysuckle and the finish is bone dry.
Background Information: At $5 this wine could possibly be the cheapest Pinot Gris in the marketplace. It is made for a Victorian based wine wholesaler which is then sold under their own brand. We have a good relationship with the Swan Hill winery which made the wine and when bottled they kept 600 cases aside for us as a cleanskin.
Looking through the internet we came across these two notes and pricing:
This is taken from a wine e-retailer based in Newcastle NSW
“Bright pale straw colour with water like hue. Delicate nose, with subtle pear and confectionary top note. The palate displays flavours of ripe pear and tropical fruit- slightly broad with just a hint of lemon. Aftertaste of pear and tropical fruit.”
PRICE: $9.50
This is taken from the website of a well known independent Victorian wine merchant
“Fresh orange blossom and quince aromatics lead on to crisp flavours of tropical fruits, nashi pear and citrus flowers. This wine displays a typical Pinot Gris palate so akin to the variety, finishing with clean lime and grapefruit crispness with guava-like notes that add interest and complexity. Scrumptious!”
PRICE: $14.50
