Old Mill Estate Langhorne Creek Touriga Nacional Rose 2006
“My favourite is one made from Touriga Nacional, the vintage port grape from Portugal, and it’s more cherries then Cherryville”.
Philip White ‘The Independent Weekly’.
A vivacious and cheeky light red from a small Langhorne Creek producer. It’s chockers with fresh raspberries and maraschino cherries with dry savoury palate making it a superb summer food wine.

Background Information: Dry Roses are experiencing a renaissance in Australia, and it is wines like this that have led the renaissance. Fashions and tastes have changed, with more and more consumers looking for lower alcohol wines (this being 12.2% alc/vol) and serious, dry rose.
In my experience, as a sommelier in London I have tried Rose wines from all over the world and I believe this Old Mill Estate Langhorne Creek Touriga 2006 is one of the best. In my time as part of the London Sommeliers Association, myself and a group of colleagues traveled extensively throughout Portugal as guests of the Portuguese Wine Association and I believe the winemakers in the Duoro Valley wine region, where most of the Touriga Nacional grapes are made into Port and red tables wines, were to try this dry Rose they too would be blown away.
Don’t take my word for it, this is what the wine critics say.
“Peter & Vicki Widdop’s Langhorne Creek fruit has assumed the guise of a savoury, berry-scented Rose, all brambly and perfumed with some red currants in the mix. The palate is nicely weighted with plenty of flavour and chewy savoury fruit tannin, adding grip through the finish: this doesn’t rely on sugar to get it over the line. It’s all about balance and charm”.
Nick Stock ‘Sumptuous’.
“Here’s a pink wine that should appeal to both sexes at the barbecue. With the fresh, raspberry fruitiness a Rose must have, there’s also a steely backbone to it that could see it cope with a charred chop. It is another rare Australian Rose that doesn’t try to charm with sugar sweetness”.
Greg Duncan Powell ‘The Sydney Morning Herald’.
The grape variety Touriga Nacional has amazing depth of flavour and colour, and its forceful natural tannins make it perfect for full – bodied Rose, as its boisterous character can be trapped without too much forced extraction. In other words, you get great flavour without even trying.
