It has a youthful red colour and has a highly aromatic nose of lavender and blackberry. The palate has generous black fruit flavours, a soft minty core and gentle tannins.
Background Information: For those of you fortunate enough to experience the Merlot dominated wines of Pomerol & St. Emilion you’ll understand that this grape variety can be as noble as its sibling, Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Americans went crazy for Merlot in the mid 1990’s and wineries, especially in California started planting crazily. Plantings and demand for the wines have now certainly slowed down for many reasons, including the bad wrap it got in the movie ‘Sideways’
In Australia there is no real distinct style. Some properties make Merlot soft and easy going which are perfect for those starting their red wine drinking apprenticeship. Others make bold and dark styles for those who like Cabernet, without that extra Cabernet grunt. Many years ago we stocked a Mudgee Merlot which was a rather big wine and we referred to it as ‘Mudgee Mud Cake’. On reflection this Mudgee wine was not a good example of what should be done with this grape variety, as it was too big and brooding.
This Guvvo’s Reef Merlot is pretty much a mixture of the soft and friendly along with a bold streak. It has a youthful red colour and has a highly aromatic nose of lavender and blackberry. The palate has generous black fruit flavours, a soft minty core and gentle tannins.
